Public Consultation

The RMI is committed to engaging external stakeholders in the development and oversight of the RMI's programs, audit requirements, and guidance documents. The RMI will post any items for public review and comment on this webpage and will discuss these items on its quarterly multi-stakeholder call, member plenary call and in other forums.

The Standards Advisory Work Group is the key body focused on guiding the RMI standards development and revisions, as described in the RMI’s standards development process here, grounded in ISO and ISEAL code.

RMAP + ESG 2.0 - ESG Standard Revision

After the successful release of the RMI’s Risk Readiness Assessment in the fall of 2023, the next step for the RMI is to align its ESG Standard with the RRA 3.0, and to support companies in meeting new regulatory requirements that are expanding supply chain due diligence requirements beyond OECD Annex II risks to include ESG risks, such as Battery Regulation, CSRD/CS3D, and German Due Diligence law, and others.

The Revised Standard would include modular Approach. The modules would follow the RRA 3.0 content/structure and include the following:

  1. A new ESG Supply Chain Due Diligence module that covers OECD/UNGP due diligence and all other ESG risks linked to sourcing for primary and secondary material (including options for communication chain of custody requirements and disclosure) in alignment with the RRA 3.0 and as prescribed under relevant regulations (CS3D, CSRD, Battery, Forced Labor, German Supply Chain Act, Critical Raw Materials)
  2. Revised existing RMI ESG facility-level standard (expanded to cover mining-specific and recycling requirements) that covers all ESG issues outside of supply chain due diligence

Timeline for the Standard Revision:

  • Internal development - March - June
  • Multi-Stakeholder Standards Advisory Group re-launch
    • ‚ÄčMeeting Dates 2024 – last Tuesday of the month 1-1.5 hours – March through September 2024

    • The composition of the group will include balanced representation from RMI’s internal and external stakeholders: RMI members representing upstream and downstream companies, auditees, auditors, NGOs, CSOs, rights holders or affected community representatives, experts, and academia

    • Workgroup Charter is available on Sharefile here (if you need Sharefile access, please contact gwu@responsiblebusiness.org)
  • RMI staff and member consultations - April - June
  • Public Consultation - 60 days - July - August 2024
    • We would like to request your feedback and expertise as we are devising this new RMAP 2.0 + ESG approach, where through a modular approach an auditee would be able to choose to either just undergo RMAP assessment focused on OECD Minerals Due Diligence, or to request RMAP + ESG module focused on broader ESG supply chain due diligence risks; and lastly the company can also request an assessment of ESG facility level risks, as a stand-alone engagement or in combination with RMAP and/or ESG supply chain module or DAP.
    • We welcome recommendations to further engage key stakeholders, rights holders or affected community representatives and subject matter experts in this consultation. Please email us with your suggestions.
  • Anticipated Standard completion - November - December 2024
